UNIBEN JUPEB: How to Apply, What It Costs and Who Qualifies

UNIBEN JUPEB is a one-year foundation programme run by the University of Benin in partnership with the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board. You do one academic session, sit the JUPEB examination, and if you pass you can be admitted into 200 level of a degree course instead of starting at 100 level. For extra revision, check out our JUPEB question bank.

That is the whole idea. What follows is the practical part — who qualifies, how the application runs, what you pay, and what happens after the exam.

Who can apply

You need at least five O'Level credit passes in subjects that are relevant to the course you want to study. English Language and Mathematics must be among them. A pass in English alone will not carry you; the five credits are the baseline.

The subjects matter as much as the grades. If you are aiming at a science-based course, your credits should come from science subjects. If you want a social science or arts course, the credits need to sit in that area. A candidate with five credits in the wrong subjects cannot be placed into the course they want, no matter how good the grades are.

Candidates who sat WAEC, NECO or a recognised equivalent are the ones this programme is built for. The 2026/2027 application is open to qualified candidates who want the JUPEB qualification as their route into university.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Go to the UNIBEN admission portal. Start from the University of Benin website and follow the link to admissions. Do not apply through a third-party site.
  2. Create an account. Use an email address and phone number you actually check. Every message about your application goes there.
  3. Pay the application fee. Payment is made through the portal, and it generates a reference you will need if anything goes wrong.
  4. Fill the form carefully. Your name, date of birth and O'Level details should match your certificates exactly. Small mismatches cause large problems later.
  5. Pick your subject combination. The available combinations are listed in the application. Choose the one that matches the degree course you are targeting, not the one that looks easiest.
  6. Upload your O'Level result and any other document the form asks for, in the format and size it specifies.
  7. Submit, then print the slip. Keep a copy. You will need the application number for screening and for checking your status.

What the application costs

The application fee for the 2026/2027 session is N20,000. Portal and bank charges are added on top of that, so plan for a little more than the figure on the page. This is the cost of applying only.

School fees for the programme itself are separate. They cover your lectures, registration and other charges for the session, and UNIBEN sets them. Budget for both the application and the programme fees before you start, because paying one does not cover the other.

Courses and subject combinations

JUPEB works on three subjects. You take three subjects in a fixed combination for the whole session, and the examination tests those three. Your combination decides which degree courses you can be considered for.

For science courses, the usual combinations pull from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. For social sciences, subjects like Government, Economics, Literature in English and CRS or IRS come into play. The full list of combinations UNIBEN accepts, and the courses each one feeds into, is published with the application. Read it before you pay, because switching after registration is not a simple matter.

How the year runs

Classes run Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm. Treat it like a full working week, because that is what it is. You will sit continuous assessment tests through each semester, and your final JUPEB examination comes at the end of the session.

Attendance carries weight. Lecturers cover material in class that is not always easy to reconstruct from a friend's notes, and the pace is fast because a full syllabus is compressed into one session. Past questions help once you have covered the topics — the JUPEB app is one place to practise with them.

After the exam: getting into 200 level

Your JUPEB result comes as grades across your three subjects. Those grades, together with your O'Level result, decide whether you are offered a place at 200 level.

The route is Direct Entry, not UTME. You apply for Direct Entry through JAMB, choose the university and course, and then go through the school's own screening. UNIBEN is not the only option at that point. Your JUPEB result is accepted by other JUPEB-affiliated universities, so a poor placement at one school does not end the road.

Two things decide your chances: how well you did in the examination, and whether your subject combination matches the course you are applying for. Candidates with strong grades in the wrong combination still get stuck.

Mistakes that cost people the offer

  • Applying with a wrong subject combination. It feels like a small choice on the form. It decides everything downstream.
  • Using a phone number or email you do not check. Notices go out once, and missed ones are hard to recover.
  • Rushing the payment. Pay on the portal, keep the reference, and check that the payment reflects before you continue filling the form.
  • Skipping the printout. A screenshot on your phone is not the same thing. Print the slip and keep a hard copy.
  • Treating the session as a gap year. The examination covers a full syllabus, and people who start serious work late rarely finish well.

Common questions

Is UNIBEN JUPEB the same as JAMB?

No. JUPEB is a separate examination that gives you an A'Level-equivalent result, and you use that result for Direct Entry into 200 level. You still go through JAMB, but through the Direct Entry channel rather than UTME. They are two different routes to the same degree.

Can I use a UNIBEN JUPEB result at another university?

Yes. JUPEB is a joint board, and the result is accepted by affiliated universities beyond UNIBEN. Each school runs its own screening and has its own subject and grade expectations, so the requirement is not identical everywhere.

If you want the 200 level route and you can commit to a full session of serious work, the UNIBEN foundation programme is a straightforward path. Get the combination right, pay on the portal, keep your documents clean, and give the year the attention it asks for.
