LASU JUPEB: Courses, Requirements and How to Get In

If you want to study at Lagos State University but missed the JAMB cut-off, or simply want to skip 100 level, LASU's JUPEB programme is the door most students try first. It is a one-year foundation course that, if you pass, takes you straight into 200 level. Want to prepare? Try the JUPEB practice app.

Where LASU JUPEB holds

LASU runs it through its School of Basic and Advanced Studies. The campus is at Topo, Badagry, along ASCON Road in Lagos State, not the main Ojo campus. That matters if you are planning where to live for the year. The programme page and registration portal are on the LASU website.

What you study

You do not pick one course and stay in it. You pick a subject combination, and it decides what you can study afterwards. For example:

  • Science and health: Physics, Chemistry and Biology, or Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
  • Social and management sciences: Accounting, Economics and Government, or Economics, Government and Literature in English.
  • Arts and humanities: CRS or IRS, French and Literature in English, or CRS or IRS, History and Literature in English.

A Physics, Chemistry and Biology student can aim for courses like Medicine, Nursing, Biochemistry or Microbiology. An Economics, Government and Accounting student can aim for Accounting, Economics, Banking and Finance or Political Science. Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing need English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in one sitting.

Requirements

  • At least five credit passes in WAEC, NECO or GCE, including English Language and Mathematics, in no more than two sittings.
  • Your name must be the same on your NIN slip, birth certificate and O'level result.
  • Your O'level result must be out. Candidates with pending results are not screened.

Fees

The application fee is ₦50,000 and is not refundable. You pay it online through LASU's e-payment. If you are offered a place, you pay a ₦30,000 acceptance fee.

How to get in through JUPEB

  1. Open the LASU website and go to the JUPEB registration portal.
  2. Enter your details and generate your invoice.
  3. Pay the ₦50,000 application fee by card or transfer.
  4. Log back in, fill the form and upload your scanned documents.
  5. Submit, then print your screening slip. It carries your exam date and venue.
  6. Sit the screening exam. If you get an offer, pay the acceptance fee.
  7. Pass your JUPEB exams at the end of the year. Then buy the Direct Entry form and move into 200 level.

The final JUPEB exams are set by the board itself, which is why the result is accepted by many universities. You can read about the exam on the JUPEB website.

How to get in through JAMB

The other route is the usual one. You write UTME, choose LASU, meet the cut-off, then attend LASU's post-UTME screening. If you are admitted you start at 100 level and spend four or five years, depending on the course.

Which route should you take?

Take JAMB if your UTME score is strong enough for your course. You save a full year.

Take JUPEB if your UTME score is low, or you did not meet the cut-off for the course you want. It costs you a year but skips 100 level, so you lose less time than writing JAMB again and hoping. You also learn the subjects you need for the course before you start it.

The best preparation for the JUPEB screening exam and the final papers is practising past questions in your subject combination. The JUPEB app has them.
