But before you start dreaming about rocking that student ID card, you need to understand how the cut-off mark system works. And trust me, it's not as straightforward as some people think.
Do a self-screening first.
Let's start with O'level, before you make your choice of course, the first thing is to look at your WAEC or NECO results. Then ask yourself, this course I'm going for, does my o'level speaks in support of me? Assuming you want to study law for example, first check if you have cleared at least five credits including English, mathematics, government, literature CRS/IRS, sometimes economics can be considered but very rare. If you have anything below 'C' on any of the above listed subjects and you dream of becoming a lawyer, bros wake up! that dream is like trying to cutdown a snakewood tree with kitchen knife.
The General Cut-Off Mark for JAMB
Let's start with the official gist. JAMB set the general cut-off mark for UNIUYO and other institutions at 140. Now, if you're hearing that and thinking "oh, 140 is easy", then my friend, we need to have a serious conversation. That 140 is just the basic requirement to even apply for Post-UTME. It's like the entry ticket to the stadium, but it doesn't guarantee you a seat inside. In short, if you score such a lower mark and you are looking for a professional course, I advise you, don't even waste energy for Post UTME.
The real truth? Most courses in UNIUYO require way higher scores. Some departments won't even look at your form if you don't have at least 200. And for the really competitive courses like Medicine and Law, you need to come with serious numbers.
Courses/Departmental Cut-Off Marks in UNIUYO.
This is where many students get confused. The departmental cut-off marks are different from that general 140 you hear everywhere. Each course has its own requirements based on competition, available spaces, and how many people applied.
Medicine and Surgery - The Big Boss (310+)
Medicine and Surgery is currently the most competitive course in UNIUYO. You need minimum of 310 in JAMB to even stand a chance. But here's the kicker - even with 320 or 330, you're not guaranteed admission. Why? Because JAMB considers students' ranking nationwide, not just their scores. They also look at the institution's available facilities and admission slots.
UNIUYO medical school can only admit a certain number of students based on their facilities, lecturers, and equipment. So even if 500 people score 320 and above, they might only admit 50 or 60 students. That's the reality of the situation.
Plus, you need to score at least 80% in your Post-UTME screening test. The screening is tough, no cap. You'll be tested on Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English. Some years, the pass mark is even higher than 80%.
Law - Another Serious One (300+)
If you're going for Law, you need around 300 to be competitive. Anything below 290 and you're playing with fire honestly. The Faculty of Law is small and they don't admit plenty students every year.
Law requires sharp brain and good analytical skills, so they take only serious candidates. Even with 300, you still need to perform well in Post-UTME. The screening questions are usually objective and essay-based, testing your knowledge of government, current affairs, and basic law concepts.
Pharmacy - Another Hot Cake (280-290)
Pharmacy students are not smiling either. You need at least 280-290 to have a realistic chance. The course is five years and very intensive. They look at your Chemistry, Physics, and Biology scores seriously during admission.
Faculty of Pharmacy in UNIUYO is one of the best in the South-South, so competition is always stiff. They also consider your Post-UTME performance heavily. Don't think say once you score 290 in JAMB, you've arrived. You still need to work hard for that screening test.
Nursing Science - Popular and Competitive (270-280)
Nursing Science has become extremely popular in recent years. Everyone wants to be a nurse now because of the opportunities abroad and job security. You need around 270-280 to be on the safe side.
The Department of Nursing Science doesn't have many slots, so competition is tight. They also conduct practical screening sometimes where they test your basic science knowledge and communication skills. It's not just about JAMB score alone.
Engineering Courses - Different Levels (240-260)
Engineering in UNIUYO includes several departments and the competition varies:
- Mechanical Engineering: About 250-260 is advisable
- Electrical/Electronic Engineering: Around 245-260
- Civil Engineering: 240-255 should work
- Chemical Engineering: 250-265 (this one is very competitive)
Engineering courses are generally tough and the school wants students who can cope with the rigorous curriculum. Your Mathematics and Physics scores matter a lot here. If you scored below C6 in these subjects in your O'Level, you might face some challenges during screening.

Architecture - The Creative Genius Course (250-270)
Architecture is for people who can draw and have creative minds. You need around 250-270 in JAMB. But JAMB score is not everything here o. They also conduct aptitude test where you'll be asked to draw and show your creative abilities.
Some years, people with lower JAMB scores but excellent drawing skills get admitted over those with higher scores but poor aptitude test performance. So if you're going for Architecture, start practicing your drawing skills now.
Science Courses - The Foundation (220-240)
Courses like Biochemistry, Microbiology, Industrial Chemistry, Botany, Zoology require around 220-240. These courses are still competitive but not as crazy as Medicine or Pharmacy.
Computer Science is also here and you need about 230-240 because many people are interested in tech these days. Statistics and Mathematics fall in the same range - around 220-235.
Geology is also a good course and you can get admitted with 210-230 depending on the year. The course has fewer applicants compared to others, so your chances are slightly better if you have a decent score.
Social Science Courses - Moderate Competition (200-230)
Social Science courses are always popular because many people believe they're "easier" than pure sciences. That's actually not true but the perception is there.
- Economics: You need around 210-230. Economics is mathematical, so don't go there thinking it's all talk-talk.
- Political Science: About 200-220 is okay
- Sociology: Around 195-215 should work
- Psychology: This one is hot now, you need 215-230
- Geography: About 200-220 is sufficient
- Mass Communication: Very popular, you need 220-240 (yes, it's in Social Sciences faculty)
Mass Communication is extremely competitive in UNIUYO because everybody wants to be a journalist or work in media. The screening test includes current affairs and general knowledge, so you need to be well-read.
Business and Management Courses (200-230)
The Faculty of Business Administration is always buzzing with activities and admission is quite competitive:
- Accounting: Around 210-230 (very popular course)
- Business Administration: About 200-220
- Banking and Finance: 205-225 is advisable
- Marketing: Around 195-220
- Insurance: Less competitive, 180-200 can work
These courses are popular because of job prospects in banks and companies. Accounting especially is very sought after, and they look for students with good Mathematics background.
Arts and Humanities - More Flexible (170-210)
Arts courses generally have lower cut-offs but that doesn't mean they're less valuable:
- English and Literary Studies: About 190-210
- History and International Studies: Around 180-200
- Foreign Languages (French, etc): 175-195
- Linguistics: About 180-200
- Theatre Arts: Around 185-205 (they also test performance skills)
- Music: About 175-195 (practical skills matter here too)
- Religious Studies: 170-190
- Philosophy: Around 170-190
If you're passionate about Arts, don't let anybody discourage you. These courses are important and they develop critical thinking skills that are valuable in many careers.
Education Courses - More Accessible (170-200)
Education courses are generally more accessible but don't sleep on them:
- Education/English: Around 180-200
- Education/Mathematics: About 185-200
- Education/Biology: Around 180-195
- Education/Economics: About 175-190
- Other Education combinations: 170-195
Education courses are important because we need good teachers in Nigeria. If you have passion for teaching, these courses are great options.

Other Requirements You Must Meet
Scoring the cut-off mark is just one part of the equation. You need other things too:
1. O'Level Requirements
You must have at least 5 credits including English Language and Mathematics in not more than 2 sittings. This is non-negotiable. Some courses need specific subjects:
- Medicine/Nursing/Pharmacy need: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
- Engineering courses need: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and one other science subject
- Law needs: English, Mathematics, Literature, Government/History, and one other Arts or Social Science subject
- Accounting needs: English, Mathematics, Economics, and two other subjects
If you don't have the right O'Level subjects, you can't be admitted even with 400 in JAMB. So check your subject requirements well well.
2. Correct JAMB Subject Combination
This is where many people mess up. You must write the correct subjects for your course in JAMB. For example:
- Medicine: English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
- Engineering: English, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry
- Law: English, Literature, Government/Religious studies, one other Arts subject
- Economics: English, Mathematics, Economics, one other subject

3. Age Requirement
You must be at least 18 years old by October of the admission year. This is the corrected minimum age requirement. If you're younger than 18, even with 350 in JAMB, they cannot admit you. It's a JAMB rule that all universities must follow.
4. First Choice Institution
UNIUYO must be your first choice in JAMB. If you chose another school as first choice and put UNIUYO as second choice, you cannot apply for UNIUYO admission even if you score 400. This is very important!
5. Post-UTME Performance
The Post-UTME screening is crucial. It can boost your chances or destroy them completely. The screening usually tests you on your JAMB subjects and general knowledge.
You need to score well in Post-UTME to complement your JAMB score. Most competitive courses require at least 60-70% in Post-UTME. Some like Medicine require 80% or more.
Understanding How Admission Really Works
Many people don't understand how JAMB and universities determine who gets admitted. Let me break it down:
1. Ranking System
Even if you score 320 in JAMB, it doesn't guarantee admission. JAMB ranks all students who chose a particular course nationwide. So if 1000 people applied for Medicine in UNIUYO and scored between 310-350, JAMB will rank them from highest to lowest.
The university then gets to choose from the top-ranked candidates based on their available slots. This is why someone with 330 might not get admitted while someone with 325 gets in - it depends on their national ranking and other factors.

2. Available Facilities and Slots
Universities can only admit students based on their capacity. UNIUYO might have equipment and space for only 50 medical students per year. Even if 500 people scored above 320, they can only admit 50.
This is determined by:
- Number of qualified lecturers
- Laboratory equipment and space
- Hostel accommodation
- Classroom capacity
- Accreditation requirements
This is why some courses are more competitive than others. Medicine, for example, requires expensive equipment and specialized facilities, so they admit fewer students.
3. Merit, Catchment, and ELDS
JAMB uses three categories for admission:
- Merit (45%): Based purely on scores and ranking
- Catchment Area (35%): For students from Akwa Ibom and nearby states
- Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS) (20%): For students from states with fewer educational opportunities.
If you're from Akwa Ibom State, you have slight advantage through the catchment area quota. But competition is still tough because many applicants are from the state.
What If You Don't Meet the Cut-Off Mark?
This is the big question many students face. You checked your JAMB result and saw 180, but the course you want requires 250. What should you do? Don't panic, you have options.
Option 1: Change Your Course
This is the most straightforward solution. If your score is not enough for your initial choice, you can request for change of course to something that matches your score.
For example, if you scored 200 and initially chose Medicine, you can change to courses like Medical Laboratory Science, Public Health, or even Education/Biology. These courses still have health-related career paths.
How to Change Course:
- Go to the nearest JAMB centre and change your course.
- Don't Wait for UNIUYO to announce Post-UTME registration as it could be too late.
- Select a new course that matches your JAMB score.
- After admission, Pay acceptance and the screening fee and complete registration
- Make sure the new course requires the JAMB subjects you wrote.
Some important things to note:
- You can't change to a course that requires different JAMB subjects
- The new course must be available in UNIUYO
- Your O'Level subjects must match the requirements of the new course
- You must still meet the cut-off for the new course
Changing course is not failure o. Many successful people today didn't study their first choice course. What matters is that you get admission and start your university journey. You can always pursue your original dream through postgraduate studies or professional certifications.
Option 2: Go Through JUPEB for Direct Entry
This is a game-changer that many people don't know about. JUPEB stands for Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board. It's a one-year advanced level program that gives you direct entry admission into 200 level.
What is JUPEB?
JUPEB is like A-Levels but specifically designed for Nigerian universities. You spend one year studying three subjects related to your intended course. At the end, you write an examination. If you pass, you get direct entry admission into 200 level of any participating university, including UNIUYO.

- Take the attitude test either online (CBT) or come to the school.
- Choose your three JUPEB subjects based on your intended university course.
- Pay the program fees (typically around ₦200,000-₦350,000 for the one year)
- Attend classes for one academic session
- Write the JUPEB examination at the end of the program
- With your JUPEB result, apply for direct entry admission into UNIUYO

The location in Ediene Abak is about 45 minutes drive from Uyo main campus. The environment is more quiet and focused on academics. Many students who couldn't get admission through UTME have successfully used this route. You can rent a house and stay at Abak costing around 50k to 120k, while female candidates can stay in the hostel with fees around 40k.
Is JUPEB Worth It?
Honestly, if you scored below 200 in JAMB and you want to study competitive courses like Medicine, Law, or Engineering, JUPEB is your best bet. It's better than wasting another year to rewrite JAMB with no guarantee of higher scores.
The one year in JUPEB also prepares you academically for university. You'll understand university-style teaching and examination better than those coming straight from secondary school. Bros, you must read, attend classes because class attendance alone is 5 marks. This program is the best alternative to JAMB but e-fit shock you if you're not serious and used to stress. If you are ajebuter, just change that mentality.
Which Option Should You Choose?
Choose Change of Course if:
- Your JAMB score is reasonably close to another course's cut-off (within 20-30 points)
- You're flexible about your career path
- You want to start university immediately
- You don't have money for JUPEB fees
- You're okay with adjusting your dreams
Choose JUPEB if:
- Your JAMB score is very far from your dream course's cut-off (more than 50 points difference)
- You're very sure about the course you want to study
- You have the financial capacity
- You're willing to spend an extra year for better positioning
- You want direct entry admission advantage
- You failed to get admission after multiple UTME attempts
Both options are valid and have led many students to success. Don't let anybody make you feel bad about your choice. What matters is making progress toward your education goals.
Extra Tips to Boost Your Admission Chances
Beyond just scoring high in JAMB, here are practical things you can do:

Don't wait until they announce screening date before you start reading. Buy past questions and start practicing. The questions usually focus on your JAMB subjects plus current affairs and general knowledge.

Make sure your name, date of birth, and other details in your JAMB profile are correct. Errors in your profile can cause serious problems during admission. If there are mistakes, go to JAMB office to correct them before admission process starts.
3. Print All Your Documents

- O'Level results (both sittings if you used two)
