JUPEB Computer Science Subject Combination: 5 Myths, Corrected
By FreshNote
Think of your three JUPEB subjects like a three-legged stool: if one leg is wrong, the whole thing wobbles. Many candidates search for the JUPEB Computer Science subject combination and then get tangled in rumours about subjects and points. Let us clear them up one by one, with plain examples and numbers from FreshNote's planner.
Short answer: what is the JUPEB Computer Science subject combination?
The planner lists 83 of 84 affiliated universities offering Computer Science through JUPEB, so you have plenty of choice. Your three subjects are Mathematics, Physics, and then Chemistry or Economics. A grade is worth A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1 and F=0, so the highest total is 15 points. For Computer Science the estimated minimum runs from 11 to 15 points, depending on the school. Eleven points could be A, A, E or A, B, D, and 15 is three A's. All figures are estimates, not official cut-offs.
A quick example makes this concrete. Say you score A in Mathematics, B in Physics and C in Economics. That is 5 + 4 + 3 = 12 points, which sits inside the estimated range for many schools in the list below, though not for the most competitive ones.
Choose the school you want and practise with it in mind. For UNILAG, start with UNILAG Computer Science JUPEB mock exam past questions, then add UNILAG Computer Science JUPEB past questions and UNILAG Computer Science entrance exam past questions.
Myth 1: any three science subjects will do
Not quite. Mathematics and Physics are both compulsory. Choosing Biology instead of one of them, for example, does not match the Computer Science combination. The third slot is the flexible one. Other courses use very different combinations, and where every JUPEB subject combination is listed shows them side by side.
Myth 2: Chemistry is compulsory
It is not. The third slot accepts Chemistry or Economics. Picture two students: one loves Chemistry, the other finds it hard but does well in Economics. Both can register for Computer Science. Pick the subject in which you can earn the higher grade, and confirm that your school accepts it. Do not choose a subject because your friends did; choose it because the grade it can give you helps your total.
Myth 3: you need perfect scores everywhere
Only a few schools sit at the very top. UNILAG, OAU are estimated at 14-15 points, and the next group sits around 13-14. Many state and federal schools, such as FUNAI, UNIOSUN, OOU, AAUA, are estimated at 11-12. Treat these as planning figures only. Keep your practice steady, and a phone makes it easier: the JUPEB app on Google Play fits short sessions into a busy day.
| Difficulty | Schools | Estimated points | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| High | 12 | 12-15 | UNILAG, OAU, UNN, UNIBEN |
| Medium | 33 | 11-14 | FUTO, ABUAD, UNIZIK, FUNAAB |
| Low | 38 | 11-14 | OSUSTECH, EBSU, Crawford, Crescent |
Myth 4: only a handful of universities take it
The planner shows 83 of 84. That is almost every affiliated school. DE slots are rough estimates, from about 2% at the most competitive schools to 7% at others, so competition still matters even when many schools are on the list. A wide list is a good thing: it means you can apply with a realistic spread, a couple of ambitious schools, a few mid-range ones and at least one safer choice.
Myth 5: if Computer Science fails, you are stuck
Several courses use the same three subjects, so one registration covers them: Software Engineering (about 11-15 points), Electrical Engineering (11-15), Mechanical Engineering (9-14), Information Technology (7-14) and Cyber Security (7-14). If you want to compare routes beyond JUPEB, see the notes for A-Level candidates.
Quick questions from candidates
Is 11 points enough?
It is the lowest estimate in the planner, and only at some schools. Aim higher if you can.
Can I replace Physics with another subject?
Not on the planner data. Physics is compulsory, along with Mathematics.
Is IJMB the same as JUPEB?
They are separate routes. To weigh them up, read about the IJMB route.
Fix your three subjects first, then pick your schools, and the rest gets easier.
Points, DE slots and difficulty are estimates from FreshNote's planner. Confirm requirements with your chosen university and JUPEB centre before you register.
