CRS 004: Religion and Society
This course is different from the others. You’re not studying ancient history or missionary movements. You’re looking at how religion – specifically Christianity – works in the real world today. Why do people believe? How does religion hold a society together? When does it cause trouble? And what should a Christian do about corruption, injustice, or broken homes? Let’s walk through it slowly.
What This Course Is About
Religion is not just private prayer. It affects how people vote, who they marry, what they eat, and how they treat strangers. Society also affects religion – a rich person might practice Christianity differently from a poor one. CRS 004 asks you to think like a sociologist for a moment, then come back to ask: what does faith have to say about all this?
Lecture 1: Relationship Between Religion and Society
What Do These Words Mean?
Religion – A system of beliefs and practices about God or the sacred. For us, Christianity: belief in the Trinity, salvation through Jesus, the authority of the Bible.
Society – A group of people sharing a common territory, culture, and institutions (family, government, schools, economy).
How Do Religion and Society Relate? In Three Ways
1. Religion shapes society – Think of the Ten Commandments influencing laws against murder and theft. Church teachings on marriage shape family life. In Nigeria, Christian values influence the push for anti-corruption.
2. Society shapes religion – Christians in a wealthy country emphasize prosperity. Christians in a persecuted country emphasize suffering and heaven. The same Bible, different emphasis because society is different.
3. They are always in conversation – Sometimes agreeing, sometimes fighting. When society legalizes something the church calls sin, you see tension. When society protects the weak, the church cheers.
Example to remember: In Nigeria, during colonial times, society (British rule) forced missionary churches to stop certain African customs. That changed how Christianity was practiced. Later, African societies rejected foreign control and birthed independent churches. Religion and society are always dancing – sometimes leading, sometimes following.
Lecture 2: Sociological Theories of Religion
You don’t need to become a sociologist. But JUPEB wants you to know a few big names and their ideas. These are theories – not absolute truth. Christians disagree with parts of them.
1. Emile Durkheim – Religion as Social Glue
What he said: Religion is not about God. It’s about society worshipping itself. When people come together for a ritual, they feel collective emotion and loyalty. That feeling keeps the group united.
Example: A church service where everyone sings, prays, and takes communion – according to Durkheim, you’re actually bonding as a group, not contacting heaven.
Effect of this theory: Some sociologists now study religion as a source of social solidarity. They ignore whether God is real. That upsets believers.
2. Karl Marx – Religion as a Drug
What he said: "Religion is the opium of the people." Poor people believe in heaven because it makes their suffering bearable. Rich people encourage religion because it keeps the poor from revolting. Religion distracts from real problems – hunger, exploitation, injustice.
Example: A preacher tells a poor man, "Don’t worry about money. Store up treasures in heaven." Marx says that preaching serves the rich.
Effect of this theory: Many activists and revolutionaries rejected religion as a tool of oppression. But Christians argue that religion also inspired abolitionists, civil rights leaders, and people who fight injustice.
3. Max Weber – Religion as an Engine of Change
What he said: Durkheim and Marx saw religion as conservative (keeping things the same). Weber said religion can change society. His famous book argued that Protestant Christianity (especially Calvinism) created the work ethic that made capitalism possible.
Example: Protestants worked hard, saved money, reinvested – not because they were greedy but because they saw wealth as a sign of God’s favor. That changed Western society.
Effect of this theory: It showed that religion is not just a reflection of society – it can be a driver of economic and cultural change.
What to Remember for Exams
· Durkheim = religion creates group unity.
· Marx = religion keeps the poor quiet.
· Weber = religion can transform society (e.g., capitalism).
You don’t have to agree. Just be able to state each theory and give one effect on society.
Lecture 3: Measures of Religion
What Does "Measure of Religiosity" Mean?
Religiosity means how religious a person or group is. But how do you measure something invisible like faith? Sociologists use visible signs.
Criteria for Measuring Religiosity
These are the things researchers look at:
1. Belief – Does the person affirm core doctrines? (God exists, Jesus rose, the Bible is true.)
2. Practice – Do they attend church, pray, read the Bible, take communion? Frequency matters – weekly vs. never.
3. Experience – Do they feel God’s presence? Have they had a conversion moment? These are harder to measure but some surveys ask.
4. Knowledge – Can they name the Ten Commandments? Tell the story of Easter? Ignorance suggests low religiosity.
5. Consequences – Does their religion affect how they live? Honesty, charity, forgiveness. A person who prays but cheats in business – some sociologists say that’s low religiosity despite high practice.
Why this matters for you: Don’t just say “someone is religious.” Be able to say in what way – belief, practice, experience, knowledge, or consequences. Exams love this kind of clarity.
Lecture 4: Functions of Religion in Society
Religion is not just about the afterlife. It does real jobs in society. Some are good, some are bad.
Positive Functions (What Religion Does Well)
1. Social control – Fear of God’s judgment stops people from stealing, lying, or murdering. Even non-believers benefit when believers behave.
2. Meaning and purpose – Why are we here? Why does suffering happen? Religion answers those questions. Without it, people can feel lost.
3. Community and belonging – Church gives you friends, marriage partners, business contacts. In a big, cold city, the church can be a family.
4. Welfare and charity – Churches feed the poor, visit prisoners, run orphanages. The government cannot do everything.
5. Coping with crisis – Death, illness, failure. Religion provides rituals (funerals, prayers) and hope. People don’t fall apart.
Negative Functions (What Religion Can Do Badly)
1. Conflict and violence – People have killed each other over religion. The Crusades, the Inquisition, and more recently, attacks between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria.
2. Division – "We are saved, you are going to hell." That can create arrogance and hatred.
3. Stagnation – "God wants you to accept your suffering" – that can stop people from fighting injustice.
4. Exploitation – False prophets demanding money for fake miracles. That’s a real problem in Nigeria today.
Exam tip: When asked "functions of religion," list both positive and negative. A balanced answer scores higher.
Lecture 5: Religion, Peace, and Conflict Resolution
Can Religion Enhance Peace? Yes, When It Works Right
· Teaching forgiveness – The Lord’s Prayer says "forgive us as we forgive others." That’s a powerful peace tool.
· Building bridges – Interfaith dialogues between Christians and Muslims reduce suspicion.
· Mediation – Religious leaders are often trusted more than politicians. They can step in when communities are fighting.
Example: In Nigeria, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) have sometimes calmed religious riots.
Using Religion for Conflict Resolution – Practical Ways
1. Speaking truth to power – A bishop can condemn violence from the pulpit without being called a traitor. People listen.
2. Creating neutral ground – A church or mosque can host peace meetings. Warriors are less likely to fight on sacred ground.
3. Offering rituals of reconciliation – A joint prayer service after a crisis. Shared grief breaks down walls.
But be honest: Religion also causes conflict. When each side believes God is on their side, compromise feels like betrayal. So the exam expects you to say: religion can heal or harm, depending on how it is used.
Lecture 6: Religious Personality and Human Values
What is a Religious Personality?
Not just someone who goes to church. A religious person – in the sociological sense – has certain traits:
· Believes in a transcendent power (God).
· Participates in rituals (prayer, worship).
· Follows moral rules from their faith.
· Belongs to a religious community.
What are Human Values?
These are things that almost all societies agree are good – whether or not people are religious. Examples:
· Honesty
· Kindness
· Justice
· Respect for human life
· Forgiveness
· Compassion for the poor
How Does Religious Personality Promote Human Values?
This is the heart of the topic. A religious person (if their faith is genuine) should:
· Be honest because God sees everything. No cheating in exams or business.
· Be kind because Jesus loved the unlovable. Visit the sick, feed the hungry.
· Seek justice because the Old Testament prophets thundered against oppression. Speak up for the poor.
· Forgive because Christ forgave you. Don’t hold grudges.
· Respect life because humans are made in God’s image. No abortion? No violence? That’s the ideal, though not all Christians agree on details.
But caution: A person can have a religious personality – pray loudly, attend church, wear religious clothes – and still lack human values. Hypocrisy is real. The exam wants you to note that true religious personality should produce human values, but it doesn’t always.
Example: A church leader who steals tithes. Religious personality (he preaches) but no human value of honesty. So you can’t assume.
Lecture 7: Christianity’s Response to Contemporary Issues
This is where you apply everything. The exam will ask: pick a current problem. What should a Christian do about it?

· Corruption
· Poverty
· Injustice (political or legal)
· Sexual immorality (fornication, adultery, homosexuality)
· Drug abuse
· Broken homes (divorce, domestic violence)
· Ethnic conflict
· False religion (cultism, occultism)
What Should Be the Christian Response? A Pattern
For any issue, the Christian response has four steps:
1. Personal repentance – If I am corrupt, I stop. If I am violent, I change. It starts with me.
2. Teaching and preaching – The pastor must address the issue from the pulpit. Not vague "be good" but specific: "Stop taking bribes."
3. Charitable action – Don’t just talk. Start a skills program for unemployed youth so they don’t turn to crime. Offer marriage counseling to save homes.
4. Prophetic witness – Speak to the government. Write letters. Join peaceful protests. Christians are not just citizens of heaven; they have a duty to make society better.
Example: Christianity and Corruption
· Response: Personal: refuse bribes. Church: teach against greed. Charity: support anti-corruption agencies. Prophetic: bishop speaks out when a governor steals.
Example: Christianity and Broken Homes
· Response: Premarital counseling. Marriage enrichment seminars. Support for single mothers. Speaking against domestic violence (don’t say "just pray").
Example: Christianity and Drug Abuse
· Response: Education in churches. Rehabilitation programs. Not shaming addicts but helping them. Prayer plus medical help.
