Introduction to the Theory of a State
The concept of the state is one of the most important ideas in political science. A state is more than just a country or a government – it is a system that helps organize people, enforce laws, and provide order in society.
But how did the idea of a state come about? What made people agree to live under a government? Why do people accept the authority of leaders?
To answer these questions, scholars and philosophers have developed several theories of the state. These theories explain the origin, nature, and purpose of the state. Each theory offers a different point of view based on history, religion, power, human behavior, or class struggle.
What is a State?
A state is a group of people living in a particular area, governed by a set of rules and leaders. It has four main features:
1. Population – the people.
2. Territory – the land.
3. Government – the leadership.
4. Sovereignty – the power to rule itself without outside control.
Theories that Explain How States Came to Be
1. Divine Right Theory
This theory says that God created the state and gave kings or rulers the right to rule.
People must obey the ruler as they would obey God. This was Common in ancient and medieval times.
Example: Many European kings in the past claimed they ruled by God's will.
2. Force Theory
This theory believes the state was created through force.
A strong person or group used power to take control of an area and made people follow their rules.
Once they were in control, a government was set up.
Example: Conquerors or warlords forming kingdoms.
3. Social Contract Theory
This is one of the most popular and modern theories.
It says that people agreed (made a contract) to form a state for peace and safety.
Everyone gave up some personal freedoms so that the government could protect their rights.
Thinkers like Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau explained it.
Hobbes: People are naturally selfish, so a strong ruler is needed.
Locke: Government must protect people’s rights; if not, people can remove it.
Rousseau: Government must follow the general will of the people.
4. Evolutionary Theory
This theory says the state grew naturally over time.
It started from small family units → to clans → tribes → and then to larger communities → finally to states.
The idea is that as human society became more complex, they needed better systems to manage things.
5. Marxist Theory (Class Conflict Theory)
Developed by Karl Marx.
Says that the state is a tool used by the rich to control the poor.
Believes that society is divided into two groups:
The bourgeoisie (the rich owners).
The proletariat (the working class).
According to Marx, the working class should rise up and create a classless society where everyone is equal, and the state will no longer be needed.
