The Institution of Monarchy in Israel
1. What is a Monarchy?
A monarchy is a system of government where a king or queen rules the people. In ancient Israel, this started when the people asked for a king to lead them, just like other nations around them.
2. Why Did Israel Want a King?
Before kings, Israel was led by judges. These were special leaders chosen by God. But the people wanted a permanent leader to protect them and make the country stronger. They asked the prophet Samuel for a king. Below are few reasons

To Be Like Other Nations
The Israelites saw that other nations had kings who led them in battles and ruled over them. They wanted to be like them and have a strong leader too (1 Samuel 8:5). -
For Protection and Security
Israel was often attacked by enemies like the Philistines. The people believed a king would lead them in war and keep them safe. -
To Unite the Tribes
Israel had 12 tribes, and sometimes they didn’t work well together. A king could unite them and make the country stronger and more organized. -
To Bring Law and Order
During the time of the judges, there was a lot of confusion and sin. A king could help bring justice, make rules, and lead the people to do what is right. -
Because of Weak Leadership
The sons of the prophet Samuel, who were judges, were corrupt and unfair. The people lost trust in them and asked Samuel to give them a king instead.
3. The First Kings of Israel
- Saul – The first king. He started well but later disobeyed God and lost His favor.
- David – A brave and godly king. He made Jerusalem the capital and united the tribes of Israel.
- Solomon – David’s son. He was very wise and built the Temple in Jerusalem, but he later made poor choices that caused problems for Israel.
4. The Kingdom Splits
After Solomon died, the kingdom divided into two parts:
- Israel (the Northern Kingdom)
- Judah (the Southern Kingdom)
Each had its own kings and government.
5. Why Is It Important?
- It gave Israel strong leadership.
- It brought peace and development for a time.
- It started the royal line that led to the hope of a future Messiah (a savior from the family of King David).
