What to take away

This post explains the meaning of political ideology and then defines a long list of ideologies you are likely to meet in Government. It opens by showing that an ideology is a set of beliefs about how society should be organised and governed, and that these beliefs shape policy, decision-making and the use of power.

From there, each ideology is given a definition and a short explanation. The list moves from older and more traditional systems such as communalism and feudalism, through capitalism and imperialism, to fascism, Nazism, Marxism, socialism and communism. It then covers authoritarianism, totalitarianism, anarchism, feminism and environmentalism.

For revision, the useful habit is to link each definition to its explanation. That is what turns a list of names into something you can actually write about in an exam.
